I did a presentation called HOW TO BE A SEX POSITIVE PHYSICIAN at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. It felt like such a gift to be invited to speak. The med school students were really amazing. They sat like sponges and absorbed everything I had to say. I got a chance to speak with a few of the students. As it turns out there is no sex ed material in their curriculum. Nothing. If it were not for this student board, one spectacular teacher and a grant they got from a pharmaceutical company they would not even get these extra curricular programs. In class as they learn how to do general patient exams they go so far as to segregate the females from the males. (We are talking about exams where you listen to the patient's heart and ask them to breath, etc..) Yowza. It is no wonder a doctor might panic/laugh/recoil when presented with an individuals unique sexual issues... be it problems with medications, injury, BDSM, transgender, motherhood, tattoos, body piercings... I hope I'll get a chance to speak with as many med school students as humanly possible in my career. As a person who speaks with thousands of people every year about sex I felt like I get to be an advocate for the general public. And I also get a lot of opportunities to teach people how to be advocates for themselves when it comes to sexual/medical situations. That was a wonderful experience.
